The City of Mississauga’s Council has temporarily granted an exception to allow fireworks for Diwali. This follows a request by MPP Dipika Damerla (Mississauga East-Cooksville) to Mayor Bonnie Crombie for Council to change the current Fireworks By-law to permit the use of fireworks for Diwali, similar to the permission granted for Victoria Day and Canada Day.

The request was discussed in Council on September 16 and again on October 28. The decision allows fireworks to be set off during Diwali (November 11 to 15, 2015).

MPP Dipika Damerla reminded residents that fireworks By-laws are to be observed at all times, and include:

·       Fireworks cannot be set off on a public street or roadway;

·       Fireworks can only be set off in a park if a permit is obtained from the Fire Chief; and

·       Fireworks should only be purchased from a licensed retailer permitted to sell fireworks to the general public within the City of Mississauga as per By-law 1-06 and By-law 340-0
