Volunteer Opportunities
Brief history and role
The Hindu Federation, which was founded by Dr. Budhendra Doobay in 1999, is an amalgamation of temples of varied Hindu denominations, and other Hindu organizations in Canada. It serves as a platform to bring into the glare of publicity, our great community, and to celebrate its achievements in the areas of religion, arts, culture and heritage.
Background of Hindus in Canada
Hindus in Canada have come from different geographical references, speaking many different languages and being exposed to many different cultural traditions and customs. We have accepted that our religion is Hinduism and our country is Canada and have made great strides in preserving our great heritage in this wonderful country.
Over the last two hundred years, Hindus have migrated to many countries all over the world and have prospered in all areas and made significant contributions in all fields of endeavor. In Canada, we have the opportunity to create the environment and institutions through which we can maintain our way of life and remain close to our religious and cultural roots.
Hindus in Canada have been very successful in establishing places of worship where we can practice our religion and provide an opportunity for the new generation of Hindus to develop an appreciation of our way of life. Our community is growing at a rapid rate and continues to make significant contributions in the areas of arts, education, business, science, finance and technology. However, we have realized that we cannot continue to exist as pockets of people, even though we do well in our own temples and within our small groups.
We have reached a stage where we need to act as one on all fronts. It is the responsibility of all Hindus in Canada to become involved in the welfare of their community, so that in the eyes of the rest of Canada, we are viewed as a united Hindu community. We are referred to by the media and other public service entities as Hindus and not as Gujarati, Punjabi, West Indian, etc. As such, we cannot continue to act in isolation to address issues that can only be resolved as a community that works together. We have the opportunity to transform our community from one that exists merely with the knowledge that we are Hindus, to one that “lives” Hinduism and a community that will be seen by all as progressive and a major contributor to the wider Canadian society.
Motivated by this need, dedicated Hindus with a vision for the future have accepted the challenge. The Hindu Federation has emerged as the Hindu body that will help to realize these fundamental needs.
